Arsenal pile pressure on struggling Everton with big win at Goodison

Read fully:
The pressure on Everton manager Ronald Koeman increased as his side dropped into the relegation zone after a 5-2 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Arsenal made by far the brighter start against opponents whose lack of confidence was soon apparent, and the visitors were almost ahead after only four minutes.

The chance came when Alexis Sanchez found Mesut Ozil, who freed Aaron Ramsey for a strike that was well stopped by home keeper Jordan Pickford.

Seconds later, Pickford dashed out to close down Sanchez as the Chile international found space near the byline, and Arsenal fashioned a third opportunity after only 11 minutes when Hector Bellerin crossed for Alexandre Lacazette to force Pickford into further action.

But the visitors' early dominance was to prove in vain when, a minute later, Everton took the lead through a superb goal from Wayne Rooney.

Granit Xhaka was closed down quickly inside his own half by Idrissa Gueye, and Rooney picked up possession to curl a great fin…

FIFA ranking: Super Eagles are 6th in Africa, 38th in world

Nigeria are the 38th best team in the world and sixth in Africa, according to the latest FIFA ranking for the month of August released on Thursday.

The Super Eagles latest position is one up from last month’s 39th place in the world, while they maintained their position on the continent behind Egypt, Senegal, Congo DR, Tunisia, and Cameroon respectively.

Meanwhile, Brazil have knocked Germany off the top of the FIFA rankings.

World champions Germany dropped to second despite winning the Confederations Cup last month after some rolling historical results were devalued.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina are in third and modest Switzerland, with a 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifiers, are fourth, which is higher than they have been since 1994.

Poland, who boast Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski amongst their ranks, are at a historic high of fifth having dropped just two points in their own qualifiers as European champions Portugal dro…

We’ll Sort Out Goalkeeper Problem — Rohr

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has assured Nigerians that the safest pair of hands will man the post, when the team takes on Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in their World Cup qualification match in Uyo on Friday.

Rohr disclosed that the coaching crew will pick the best amongst Akpeyi, Dele Alampasu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa who was in good form when the home-based Eagles beat Benin Republic to qualify for the CAF Africa Nations Championship.

“We have Akpeyi, we have (Ikechukwu) Ezenwa, we have (Dele) Alampasu, we will see.

“We have a local goalkeeper, we have a very young one and we have another one (Akpeyi) who is more experienced.

“He is playing in South Africa, and we will see with our goalkeeper coaches to determine who will start the game.”

The Super Eagles will play host to Cameroon in Uyo on September 1, 2017 and the return leg game is scheduled to be played in Yaoundé three days later.

Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set to join Chelsea

Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set to join Chelsea
Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the brink of joining Premier League champions Chelsea.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, 24, will be out of contract next summer and has refused to sign a new deal at Emirates Stadium.

The England international has started every game for the Gunners so far this season, including Sunday's 4-0 defeat at Liverpool, when he was substituted.

Chelsea have declined to comment but it is understood they have agreed a transfer fee with their London rivals.

Liverpool have also shown an interest, but the former Southampton player is set to move to Stamford Bridge.

Oxlade-Chamberlain would be Chelsea's fifth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of striker Alvaro Morata, goalkeeper Willy Caballero, defender Antonio Rudiger and midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had made it clear he wanted to add further to his squad before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

Ousmane Dembele unveiled in front of 18,000 fans at Camp Nou

French wonderkid Ousmane Dembele’s presentation as Barcelona’s newest star was overshadowed by the tense atmosphere surrounding the Catalan club as fans jeered and called for president Josep Maria Bartomeu to resign.
The 20-year-old became the second most expensive player ever after completing a 105 million euro ($125 million) deal that could rise to 147 million with add-ons from Borussia Dortmund on Friday.
However, Barca’s planned programme for a blockbuster presentation was delayed for nearly two hours due to a paperwork issue in releasing his registration from Dortmund.
The patience of 18,000 fans at the Camp Nou was tested with whistles during the delay and chants of “Bartomeu resign”.
Barca’s board has been under huge pressure due to the club’s fading fortunes on the field and the loss of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for a world record 222 million euros earlier this month.
The attendance was also well down on the 50,000 fans that welcomed Neymar on his presentation four years ago.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp urges his players to be like Chelsea and see games out

Jurgen Klopp wants his Liverpool players to be more like Chelsea Jurgen Klopp has urged his Liverpool players to be more like Chelsea as they bid to secure Champions League football next season. The Reds are third in the Premier League but only six points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, who have two matches in hand, after an 87th-minute equaliser from Josh King earned Bournemouth a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Wednesday. Liverpool have sometimes struggled to get results over the line this season but Klopp blamed a lack of experience and said they would do well to follow the example of Chelsea, who have dropped just eight points from winning positions this term compared to the Reds, who have dropped 15.
