Kaduna Govt declares ASUU strike unlawful

Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Friday declared as unlawful the strike embarked on by the Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). 

According to a statement by the Governor’s Spokesman, Mr Samuel Aruwan, the KASU branch of ASUU confirmed that the branch had joined the nation-wide strike as full members of the national union.

He said that there was no trade dispute between the state government and ASUU. “This is unacceptable to the state government. It is an anomaly that employees can be on strike without declaring a dispute with their employer. “It bears restating that Nigeria is a federation of states and no trade union can alter this federal reality by imposing on an employer – a state government – the terms that federal employees have agreed with the Federal Government.

Five Nigerian pilgrims die in Saudi Arabia.

Five Nigerian pilgrims to this year’s hajj in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, have died. The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Abdullahi Mohammed, announced the passage of four the pilgrims in Tuesday in Makkah, Islam’s holiest city.
Mr. Mohammed, who spoke at the 2017 pre-Arafat meeting with Hajj stakeholders, however declined to disclosed the identities of the late pilgrims as well as the circumstances that led to their death.
He said such information could only be disclosed after their families had been appropriately informed.
The Nahcon chair pleaded with the media to withhold the details so as not to further devastate the families of the affected pilgrims.
Shortly after the chairman spoke, an official on the medical team of Nahcon announced the passage of another pilgrim from Kwara.
A total 81,200 Nigerian pilgrims are performing this year’s hajj, all of whom have converged on Makkah after some of them visited and prayed at the Prophet Mohammed’s mosque in Madi…

Nair rebounds against dollar

The Naira on Tuesday, appreciated against the dollar at the parallel market.

The Nigerian currency gained N2 to exchange at N365 to the dollar, stronger than N367 posted on Monday while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N475 and N433.

Trading at the Bureau De change (BDC) window saw the Naira closing at N362 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N473 and N433, respectively.

At the investors’ window, the Naira was sold at N359.67 to the dollar, while it exchanged at N305.8 to the dollar at the interbank market.

Traders said patronage was low at the parallel market.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports BDCs got the weekly foreign exchange auction from the CBN.

FIFA ranking: Super Eagles are 6th in Africa, 38th in world

Nigeria are the 38th best team in the world and sixth in Africa, according to the latest FIFA ranking for the month of August released on Thursday.

The Super Eagles latest position is one up from last month’s 39th place in the world, while they maintained their position on the continent behind Egypt, Senegal, Congo DR, Tunisia, and Cameroon respectively.

Meanwhile, Brazil have knocked Germany off the top of the FIFA rankings.

World champions Germany dropped to second despite winning the Confederations Cup last month after some rolling historical results were devalued.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina are in third and modest Switzerland, with a 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifiers, are fourth, which is higher than they have been since 1994.
